Spencer Mar Guilburt was born in Santa Monica, CA in 1983. Guilburt is a Contemporary artist whose style blends a variety of influences and media from painting, photography, to large-scale murals. Spencer works almost entirely from memory and loose digital mock-up leaving the final adaptation of the compositions to come from a less predetermined space. The paintings are as much meditations as they are thoughtful explorations on a reoccurring theme. The works often seem to unfold and define themselves fully only as they are being created. His oeuvre often appears bound purely to aesthetic appeal of line and the relationship between colors but, references to life, gesture, and movement abound. His “fire-flower” motif is a recurring homage to the natural world that has taken many forms. Repetition of the theme relaxes the mind, allowing it to go into an almost meditative state, where information can flow more freely, without the obstructions and trappings of conscious thought. In this state true insights are uncovered and the art seems to flow from a place of “thought” to a state of “being” with the artist simply being the conduit not the creator.
Spencer’s work is included in Swizz Beats’ Dean Collection, Neiman Marcus Collection, and he has designed the Neiman Marcus holiday window display alongside artists like Jasper Johns and Warhol. He has shown works at the Whitney Museum and embellished clock at LACMA in correlation with Christian Marclay’s “The Clock”. He recently completed installations for BMW, Adidas, the University of California Los Angeles, and the LA Rams. He has collaborated with world renowned photographer Terry O’Neill on a series of works. Spencer and his work, were featured on a nationwide television interview on ABC Sports. His work is also seen online and in such publications as W Magazine, Whitewall, Interiors Magazine, Artillery Magazine, Forbes, Juxtapoz, Hypebeast, Complex, Angeleno, The Hollywood Reporter, Caras (MEXICO), Fine Life (JAPAN) and LA Weekly.
